The Spyderco Mule Team project is one of my favorite ways of getting my hands on some of the newest and most exciting knife steels on the market today. A huge part of the appeal of these blades is the fact that Spyderco has made these amazing blade steels available at the lowest cost possible.
Need To Buy Mule Team Scales?
Part of this cost savings is due to the fact that these blades are all the same shape and size, all measure the exact same dimensions, and come without handle scales or sheaths.

Wooden Mule Team Handles
I have made a few different sets of wooden handles for my Mule Team blades. My favorite set was made out of local birdseye maple on the MT31 – CPMS45VN blade and has a boiled linseed oil finish on them. This really brings out the birdseye figure in the wood and looks really good with a natural-colored leather sheath.
Another wooden scale set that I have made was featured in the Spyderco calendar as the February 2022 picture. This was part of the Spyderco calendar contest and I was very happy to be chosen to have one of my knives featured.
This set was made with ironwood handles, and brass pins, and is on an MT28 – CPM SPY27 Mule Team blade.
Many other blade steel AFI’s have made some amazing wooden scales that you can find for inspiration with a quick search through the Spyderco Mule Team forum pages.

While making custom wooden handles and a sheath for your blade may be a great project and a fun way to customize your new knife. It does take time, tools, and some basic skills that not everyone wants to put in.
Spyderco does offer black G10 scales and hardware directly through the SFO store, as well as Boltaron sheaths and a deep carry leather sheath option. Halpern Titanium also offers a wide variety of great colors and styles in a few different materials for you to choose from.
Blade Protection Mule Team Scales
In an effort to improve options and give the Mule Team Army more choices in materials and styles, I have been making translucent resin scales for many members of the Spyderco forum.
I am now selling these directly through my website shop here in a few different colors and pattern styles. These scales are compatible with all the Mule team blades and come with a full set of stainless steel mounting hardware.
They only take a few minutes to mount and can also be easily swapped over to a different blade if you want to. You can click this link here to visit my shop page and see all the details, colors, and designs as well as detailed shipping information.
Spyderco Mule Team Handle Scales – Translucent Green
These translucent scales show the blade tang through the scales and allow you to see the hole pattern in the steel of the blade’s handle. This makes a unique and interesting look that really stands out from standard solid color scales.
